The speech of Prof. Dr. M.J. Robert Nout
Dear Respected Vice Rector of Can Tho University – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Van Xe,
Dear staff of the educational program,
Dear lecturers and staff of the Biotechnology Research and Development Institute,
Dear parents and family relatives off the graduates,
Dear students, and of course: Dear Graduates.
It is an honour and pleasure for me to be present as your guest and to say a few words at this occasion of commencement.
Let me quickly introduce myself to you: I presently live in the Netherlands, I was trained as a food technologist at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and gradually specialized in the microbiology and chemistry of fermented foods. I have worked in Africa, Asia, United States, and Europe. Much of my work was aimed at educating students from all over the world, including Vietnam. At present I am teaching an advanced course at your university of Can Tho.
First of all, I would like to congratulate all 155 students who are about to be graduated with their degree of Bachelor of Science.
Of course, I also congratulate their parents, relatives and friends with this happy day!
Perhaps the past few years were hard for the parents because they missed their son or daughter at home. But, today we are all together and we will enjoy the fruits of labour! Education is the best investment!
After completion of the Bachelors degree, a new phase will start for you. Some of you will look for a job or start their own business, some will continue for higher degrees like Masters. It is not always easy to make a choice.
If you allow an old man, I will offer a few suggestions for all of you
1. Stay humble: respect points of view that differ from yours. The experience of persons with different background can enrich yours. Try to be a team worker and you will be rewarded by results that you could not obtain as a single person.
2. Stay curious: your graduation to Bachelor is not the end of your studies, but the beginning of life-long learning. Statistics have shown that curious and intellectually active persons have more satisfaction from their job, and even seem to live longer.
3. Keep up-to-date: Take the time for refreshment of your knowledge by following courses, for example at this University. This will not only improve your performance in your job but it will help you to build your social network of colleagues as well.
4. Contributr to society: You have been favoured and given the opportunity to study at this beautiful University. This has been made possible by the Vietnamese society. Keep this in mind when you are asked to fulfill a voluntary public function, or to contribute to needs of the society. You remember the saying “Giving is better than Taking”.
I wish you all a successful career, and for tonight a happy party!
“Good luck to you” in Vietnamese means “Chúc bạn may mắn”, or can say chortly “Chúc may mắn”.
